Early Life of Gbenga Adeboye

As a boy, Gbenga was often chastised 'forwardness' precociously. Adeboye was one of those kids who did not know when their mothers gave them the 'eye' to close them in guests' presence. Without filter, Young Gbenga let it rip: he said anything and everything his eyes saw. He had developed a reputation for being the school clown by the time he was a high school student at Oranmiyan Memorial Grammar School Ile-Ife: the one who could bail himself out of trouble (which he mostly brought into himself!) by telling jokes. But this was in the 70's: by forming and telling faabu nobody ever made a living. He was soon sent off to Lagos, the big city, to find a proper livelihood. He has got a job as a commercial attaché with the Nigerian Airports Authority. His job at the airport was to pick up visitors, carry placards and announce their names from a small notepad.

Gbenga Adeboye Career

Gbenga was an entertainer which was flexible. An orator, actor, ceremonial leader, radio presenter, and songwriter. His Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation system gave him the Funwontan pseudo-name. Many of his compositions, as he carved his own style of singing, did not go the typical 'words and melody' way.

Between 1990 until 2003, he released six albums. His method was to compose songs on one side, and to compose comedy on the other. Via songs like Iya (Mother) and Yoruba Ronu he warned and just cracked fans on tracks like London Yabbis. Who can ever forget its characters Itu Baba Ita and Abesunpinle Laisi? He was a ventriloquist who had been able to mimic almost twenty voices in a set. And he'd done all these effortlessly. He mixed his radio career with comedy, always teasing his fans by delivering strings of jokes on his next album which he vowed to complete.

He was described as a generous and carefree person during his lifetime, and at his death. As fans have called him, Alaye mi Gbengulo was a mentor to many. Some of those who hold him in high regard are: Abbey Fagboro, Bashiru Adisa better known as Baba Gboin, Ereke ni Soobu. Fathia Balogun, actress from Nollywood reached limelight when she starred in one of his music videos as a dancer.

Seun Adeboye, his sister, recounted in her album titled 'Omo Majemu' translated as 'Convenant Child' how he lived before hitting the limelight and how different Wednesday was in his life. Gbenga Adeboye was born on Wednesday, September 30, 1959, according to her; he started his education on Wednesday, had his first trip to America on Wednesday, and his first radio program on Wednesday.

He was known at birth as Elijah Oluwagbemiga Adeboye, but it was difficult to keep track of his names as at the time of his death. The names in humour and music were the result of his exploits. Some of the names are Funwontan, Oduology, Oluwo Alhaji Pastor, Abefe, Jengbetiele, Itu baba Ita, and Gbengulo Allaye mi. He is the founding founder of FIBAN in Nigeria, the Nigerian Organization for Professional and Independent Broadcasters. An autonomous body of professional broadcasters cooperates. He also claimed that God had sent him back to earth to complete his unfinished business and was instructed to be buried with his Book of Bible and Hymn.

He pulled through, emaciated and pulled through everything but he did. Gbenga Adeboye died on the last day of April 2003 in a hospital in Lagos. His funeral was almost a state event: a sea of fans and good wishes accompanied his body to its final place of rest in Akute, Ogun State, after being laid in state at Lagos Televison 's premises.
